I have been sitting with gratitude. I just finished Diana Butler Bass’s book Grateful. I am working on not filling my life with needless stuff, food, busyness. I am sitting with gratitude and it flows through me. I am grateful for my coffee and a quiet moment. I am grateful for beauty and the gift of this community. I am grateful for friends far and wide.

Jane Kenyon wrote a poem called Otherwise. This is a portion of it ~

I got out of bed
on two strong legs.
It might have been otherwise. I ate
cereal, sweet
milk, ripe, flawless
peach. It might
have been otherwise.

This is gratitude. In the midst of turmoil, in the midst of heartache, in the midst of suffering there are things to be grateful for and if we live our life looking for the simple things, the ordinary things – a cup of tea, the beauty of snow – we will find grace.

My heart has been flooded with gratitude because I am stopping to see, to feel, to pay attention.

May you, too, be filled with gratefulness.
