Calvary Church on a Mission

For the fourth year in a row, we will send a team to New Orleans for one week of reconstruction.  From February 27 – March 5, the Mission 2011 Team will join with others from the New England Conference of the United Methodist Church in working with the Louisiana United Methodist Disaster Response Ministry to rebuild the homes and lives of those affected by Hurricane Katrina.

For the past three years, mission teams have helped with hanging, mudding, and taping drywall, laying flooring, moving furniture, framing, roof and siding repair, anything that was asked of them.  But, their most important job was listening.  They listened to the people who lived through that horrible time in 2005 and whose lives are still not recovered.  The Louisiana United Methodist Disaster Recovery Ministry has pledged to rebuild New Orleans one house, one family, at a time for as long as it takes.  To date, they helped 21,365 people repair 12,641 homes and have hosted over 88,000 volunteers.

When asked when they will be finished, the response is always the same:

“We’ll be finished when the volunteers stop coming.”

Calvary Church is honored to be a part of this effort.

Mission 2011’s four-member team is a small but determined bunch who are looking forward to their work in The Crescent City.  In order to defray costs, and to celebrate the four years of Calvary’s mission in Louisiana, the church is hosting “A Taste of New Orleans” fundraising dinner on Sunday, March 6 at 6:00 p.m..   Tickets are $15 per person and $7.50 for children 11 and younger.  Come enjoy chicken and gumbo, rice and beans, and all the fixins!  Tickets may be purchased by contacting the church office, office@calvaryarlington.net/dev , 781-646-8679.  Please join us!
